What we use in class — and how to use it at home

In ThinkerLab robotics and coding classes across Melbourne's north-west, students program BBC micro:bit-powered robots built on the Yahboom SuperBit expansion kit. The library above is the same one we load in class: it adds blocks for motors, servos, sensors and lights, and works with Lego Technic pieces so kids can extend their robot builds creatively.

To use it at home, open Microsoft MakeCode for micro:bit in any browser, create a new project, choose Extensions, and paste the repository URL above. The SuperBit blocks appear in the toolbox and your child can keep building the same projects they started in class — no installation or account required.

Free platforms we recommend for practice

  • MakeCode (makecode.microbit.org) — the block-based editor we use for robotics. Includes a full micro:bit simulator, so kids can test code even without hardware at home.
  • Scratch (scratch.mit.edu) — ideal for game design practice between sessions. Many of our game design club projects can be rebuilt and remixed in Scratch.
  • micro:bit classroom resources (microbit.org) — free lesson ideas and projects from the Micro:bit Educational Foundation, great for curious kids who want to go further.
